Adopted USAN: Reltodecacog alfa has been adopted by the United States Adopted Names (USAN) Council as the non-proprietary name for VMX-C001, VarmX’s lead asset in global Phase 3 development
INN under review: The name remains under review by the World Health Organization (WHO), with publication as the recommended International Nonproprietary Name (INN) anticipated in September 2027
Consistent scientific identity: VarmX will use reltodecacog alfa (VMX-C001) at first mention across development, publications and medical communications, with the short form ‘relto’ used in everyday communications
Leiden, The Netherlands, [DD Month] 2026 – VarmX, a biotech company developing innovative approaches to bypass direct oral anticoagulants targeting activated factor Xa (FXa inhibitors), today announced that reltodecacog alfa has been adopted as the United States Adopted Name (USAN) for its lead asset, VMX-C001.
Reltodecacog alfa remains under review by the World Health Organization (WHO) International Nonproprietary Names (INN) Programme. Publication as the recommended INN is anticipated in September 2027. Until then, VarmX will refer to the compound as reltodecacog alfa (VMX-C001) at first mention, retaining VMX-C001 as a secondary identifier where needed. In everyday communications, the compound will be referred to by the short form ‘relto’.
Adopting the non-proprietary name now gives the programme one consistent scientific identity across clinical development, scientific publications and medical communications. It also allows clinicians, investigators and other stakeholders to become familiar with the name over time, rather than in the period immediately before a potential launch.
Reltodecacog alfa (VMX-C001) is a recombinant modified human coagulation Factor X protein engineered to be insensitive to Factor Xa inhibitors. It is currently being evaluated in EquilibriX-S (NCT07288489), a global registrational Phase 3 trial in patients taking FXa inhibitors who require an urgent surgery or procedure.
Martijn Negen, Chief Operating Officer of VarmX, commented: “The adoption of reltodecacog alfa as the USAN for VMX-C001 is an important step as our programme moves through Phase 3. Introducing the name now means investigators, clinicians and partners will recognise it consistently across our trials, publications and scientific exchange. We thank our Team and our strategic collaborator, CSL, for their work on this milestone.”
Notes to Editors
About VarmX – VarmX was spun out from Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) in 2016 by Professor Pieter Reitsma, a world leading expert in hemostasis and thrombosis. VarmX’s lead compound, reltodecacog alfa (VMX-C001), is a modified recombinant blood factor X. The compound is being developed for the treatment of severe spontaneous bleeding and for the prevention of bleeding during urgent surgery in patients taking oral factor Xa inhibitors (FXa DOACs) as anticoagulation therapy. The Company is supported by a strong syndicate of investors including Sound Bioventures, EIC, EQT Life Sciences (formerly LSP), Inkef, Lundbeckfonden BioCapital, Ysios Capital, BioGeneration Ventures and InnovationQuarter. VarmX has a strategic collaboration with CSL, which funds the EquilibriX-S trial. For more information, please visit www.varmx.com.
